A Bonobo Named Lucy
When we began our mission to save the bonobos, we realized pretty fast that we wanted YOU to be involved. Human kids can help bonobo kids….we can’t wait to hear about you, and to introduce you to one of our favorite bonobo kids! So, without further ado, meet Lucy. This is a picture of her with her mom.
I’ll catch you up to speed on Lucy in a minute, but if you want to see her in action…then get her book, I’m Lucy: A Day in the Life of a young Bonobo. When you buy Lucy’s book, all of the profits go to help organizations (The Bonobo Initiative, www.bonobo.org and Roots and Shoots, www.rootsandshoots.org) that are working very hard to save the bonobos, all animals and our planet.
In Lucy’s book, you’ll learn all about her family and how silly she is everyday – we have our own kids, and believe me, sometimes Lucy acts just like them, and we bet just like you! She sings, she plays, she crawls all over her mom like she’s a jungle gym – she’s a certified nutball.
Lucy lives in the Jacksonville, Florida zoo. In an effort to save the bonobos from extinction, there are currently 172 bonobos living in zoos across the world. Their natural habitat is under the dense canopied forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) right on the equator in Africa. But, unfortunately because of the war in the DRC, hunting and habitat destruction (people are cutting down their trees), the bonobos are now an endangered species and an estimated 10,000 bonobos remain in the DRC. It is very difficult for researchers to get to the Democratic Republic of Congo – which is one reason it is hard to count the bonbobos and even harder to protect them.
This is where YOU come in! The bonobos are in trouble – and we think that you can help. Visit this blog, or sign-up for blog alerts, and keep learning about Lucy and the bonobos. We’ll give you real ideas for how you can help the bonobos – and we’ll keep you informed and educated about everything bonobo.
